Men’s Hockey Pulls Off Win in Overtime

Aston, PA – The EC Men's Hockey team fought off the tough Knights of Neumann University 3-2 in overtime to remain undefeated in ECAC West conference play. The win improves the Soaring Eagles to 6-3-0 overall and 5-0-0 in ECAC West play; while the loss drops the Knights to 5-3-0 overall and 2-3-0 in conference play.

Both teams fought hard in the first period not giving any offense the opportunity to score. The Soaring Eagles offense was able to outshoot the Knights 12-10, but was not able to connect on any goals. In the second period Elmira came out on a quick start with Jesper Strale '14 (Uppsala, Sweden -- Springfield Pic's) feeding the puck up to Kevin Willer '12 (Toronto, ONT -- North York Rangers) who would score the goal at the 3:31 minute mark. About three minutes later D'Arcy Oakes '13 (Shanty Bay, ONT -- Quinnipiac University) scored an unassisted goal to put EC up 2-0. However, Neumann would respond at the 8:42 minute mark when Dave Garvais scored in the upper left corner to beat EC goalie Darren MacDonald '13 (Stittsville, ONT -- Nepean Raiders). Cory Park and Marlon Gardner were credited for the assist.

In the third period the Knights would come out playing hard looking to tie the game. At the 14:11 mark the Knights did just that as D'Lane Sather and Jake Kratz would assist teammate Chris Bournazos for the game tying goal. The game would stay tied at 2-2 and would need extra time to be decided.

In overtime the Soaring Eagles offense would come alive as Brock Sawyer '12 (Toronto, ONT -- Powell River Kings) and Martin Lee '12 (Toronto, ONT -- Vaughan Vipers) would assist teammate John Clewlow '12 (Brampton, ONT -- Dixie Bee Hives) for the game winning goal 3-2. MacDonald made 26 stops for the Soaring Eagles, while Matt Tendler made 32 stops for the Knights.

The Soaring Eagles will take on non-conference opponent SUNY Fredonia tomorrow evening at 7:00 p.m. at the Murray Athletics Center.
