Women’s Ice Hockey Scores Five Unanswered in 5-1 Win at Potsdam

Potsdam, NY – The Elmira College Women's Ice Hockey team used five unanswered goals to rout host Potsdam 5-1 Saturday afternoon in Potsdam. The win improves the Soaring Eagles to 7-1-1 overall and 5-0-0 in ECAC West play, while the loss drops the Bears to 2-5-1 overall and in conference competition.

The Bears got on the board first three minutes in when Jenn Crawford and Izzy Fayerman assisted an Annmarie Lewis goal. Potsdam committed three penalties the remainder of the period but EC was unable to convert on the power play.

The second period was completely different as the Soaring Eagle offense wasted no time scoring less than two minutes in when Ashley Ryan '15 (North Chili, NY -- Rochester Edge) fed Alex Bresler '12 (Golden, CO -- Colorado Select) for her seventh marker of the season. Elmira seized the lead for good with just less than one minute remaining in the second when Erin Weston '15 (Ajax, ONT -- Etobicoke Dolphins) scored the eventual game-winner on assists from Lindsay Mitchell '12 (Arnold, MD -- No. American Hockey Academy) and Ella Stewart '14 (Mississauga, ONT -- Notre Dame Hounds).

The Purple and Gold carried great momentum into the third period and capitalized on it at the 5:38 mark when Bresler tallied her second goal of the game. Ryan and Kathryn Walker '12 (Edmonds, WA -- Colorado Select) recorded assists on the goal. Halfway through the frame Mitchell registered her third goal of the season off a feed from Brooke Wilgosh '15 (Regina, SK -- Notre Dame Hounds) and Lindsay Burrows '15 (Stouffville, ONT -- Whitby Wolves). Elmira added an insurance score when Stewart cashed in on her third goal of the season, with Walker and Bresler tallying assists on the play.

EC outshot the Bears 41-18 in the competition. Lisa Marshall '14 (Powhatan, VA -- Wayne State University) stopped 17 shots in net for the Soaring Eagles, while Jen Conophy made 36 saves for Potsdam. Elmira returns to action tomorrow when it plays the Bears in the second game of the weekend series at 1:00 p.m.
