Men’s Hockey Extends Winning Streak to Six

Pine Valley, NY EC Men's Hockey looked for their sixth straight win as they hosted the Red Dragons of SUNY Cortland in a non-conference match-up.  Tonight's contest featured the number 13 nationally ranked Soaring Eagles and a Red Dragons team which just came off a heartbreaking 4-3 OT loss to number 1 nationally ranked SUNY Oswego.

Elmira wasted no time as Colin Hoey '13 (Doylestown, PA -- New England Huskies, EJHL) put Elmira on the scoreboard just 3:20 into the first period with a shorthanded goal.  Hoey's goal would come as a result of Marty Lee '12 (Toronto, ONT -- Vaughan Vipers, OPJHL) clearing the defensive zone and Hoey making a hustle play, beating all skaters to the puck for a one on one with the goalie.  Hoey would bury a shot through the five-hole to give EC the 1-0 edge.  Just under four minutes later Elmira would claim a 2-0 lead as Brock Sawyer '12 (Toronto, ONT -- Powell River Kings, BCHL) scored his first career goal as a Soaring Eagle.  Sawyer would sneak a wrist shot from the blue line past the Cortland goalie on a power-play chance.  Cortland would respond with two goals at the 11:12 and 11:33 mark evening the contest at 2-2 going into the first intermission.

The second period would produce two goals, one for Elmira and one for Cortland.  At the 2:13 mark in the period Jesper Strale '14 (Uppsala, Sweden -- Springfield Pic's EJHL) would score Elmira's third goal as he collected the loose puck in front of the net to beat the goalie on the stick-side.  John Clewlow '12 (Brampton, ONT -- Dixie Bee Hives, OPJHL) and Hoey picked up assists on the goal.  Cortland would again rally for another score tying the game at three a piece.  The score would remain at 3-3 as the period came to a conclusion.

Elmira would catch fire in the third period as they erupted for three goals.  Lee set the tone early as he found the back of the net just 1:31 into the period.  Tyler Campbell '12 (Mississauga, ONT -- Mississauga Chargers, OPJHL) and Clewlow picked up assists on the goal.  The Red Dragons would answer back with a goal of their own to tie the game at 4-4.  at the 11:42 mark captain Rick Schrank '11 (Newmarket, ONT -- Newmarket Hurricanes, OPJHL) put EC ahead 5-4 as he executed on a power-play opportunity on passes from Lee and Rick Acron '12 (Barrie, ONT -- Couchiching Terriers, OPJHL).  With time running low, Schrank again found the back of the net to seal the Elmira victory with just 17 seconds left in regulation.  Elmira would take the contest 6-4, extending their winning streak to 6 games.

EC goalie Darren MacDonald '13 (Stittsville, ONT -- Nepean Raiders, CJHL) earned the win as he made 19 saves in 60 minutes of action.  Elmira will look to make it 7 in a row as they travel to take on the Statesmen of Hobart College on Friday February 11th.  Face-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
