Horseheads, NY – The Elmira College Field Hockey team put up a great fight, but ultimately fell 2-0 to Houghton College Tuesday afternoon at the Murray Athletics Center in Horseheads, NY.
EC had a great shot to get on the board a little over midway through the first half but was unable to convert. The Highlanders started a quick counterattack as Ashley Engle took the ball down the field and shot on Elmira goalie Lauren Thomas '14 (Marshfield, MA -- Marshfield), who made a great save. Unfortunately Houghton's Colleen Sullivan was in the right area to convert a rebound goal.
The Purple and Gold continued to give great effort in an attempt to tie the score and had a couple of great opportunities. McKenna Light '14 (Marathon, NY -- Marathon) finished with three shots, while Sarah Harden-Marshall '14 (Marathon, NY -- Marathon) and Gina Maffei '13 (Wayne, NJ -- Morristown-Beard) had one shot apiece.
The Highlanders added an insurance goal in the 67th minute off a penalty corner. Engle fed Rachel Stefanski who finished into the lower right portion of the net for the final score of 2-0.
Thomas finished with a remarkable 11 saves in net, while Hillery Duman made two stops for Houghton. Elmira returns to action this Saturday when they visit Hartwick for an 11:00 a.m. start.
