Men's Hockey Pulls Off Close Win Against Blue Devils

Fredonia, NY – The EC Men's Ice Hockey team won in thrilling fashion over the Blue Devils of SUNY Fredonia Tuesday evening at the Steele Hall Ice Arena. The Soaring Eagles improve to 9-5-1 overall, while the Blue Devils fall to 6-5-3 overall.

Neither team would get many chances to score in the first period. Both teams played tough defense that would not allow any offense opportunities. In the second period EC would get its opportunity to score with Brendan Sanders '12 (Mississauga, ONT -- Vaughan Vipers) tallying an unassisted short-handed goal at the 13:42 minute mark. The Soaring Eagles would look to add to its lead in the third period and get some breathing room.

In the third period the Purple and Gold would do just that by scoring less than one minute in. Kevin Willer '12 (Toronto, ONT -- North York Rangers) scored the game winning power play goal as Darcy Vaillancourt '12 (Bonfield, ONT -- Innisfil Lakers) and Christian Morissette '12 (Beaconsfield, QUE -- RPI) would assist Willer on the play. However, the Blue Devils would not give up as they would narrow it to a one goal lead at the 15:40 mark of the period. Mike Monfredo tallied the goal being assisted by two of his teammates. Fredonia would pull its goaltender for the final 90 seconds and earned a 6-on-3 skating advantage when Elmira was called for having too many men on the ice with 6.7 seconds left. Elmira won the ensuing faceoff and froze the puck behind its net securing the win.

Matt Milne '13 made 25 saves for EC in only his second game of the season, while Mark Friesen made 19 saves for Fredonia. Among them were key stops during a Fredonia's eight power play opportunities. The Soaring Eagles will return to action Friday, January 13th as they host SUNY Morrisville at the Murray Athletics Center.
