Clinton, NY -- The No. 3 nationally ranked EC Women's Ice Hockey team won another thrilling game over Hamilton College 6-0 in nonconference play Wednesday evening. The win improves the Soaring Eagles to 11-1-1, while the loss drops the Continentals 4-5-0.
In the first period both teams were very pretty with Elmira only outshooting the Continentals 8-7. However, the Soaring Eagles got the edge at the 13:52 mark when
Amber Tirri '13 (Ringwood, NJ -- Wyoming Seminary) played the puck to Kathryn Walker '12 (Edmonds, WA -- Colorado Select) for a slap shot from inside the left circle that found the back of the net. Hamilton would get a late opportunity to score off an Elmira penalty, but the Continentals would not be able to convert. After successfully killing a penalty early in the second period, Elmira stretched its lead to 2-0 with
Lindsay Mitchell '12 (Arnold, MD -- North American Hockey Academy) scoring a goal at the 12:40 mark.
Ashley Ryan '15 (North Chili, NY -- Rochester Edge) played the puck around the left side to
Caitlin Metcalf '13 (Calgary, AB -- Edge School for Athletes) behind the net, and Metcalf fed it out to Mitchell inside the right circle. Mitchell skated in and lifted the puck into the net for her seventh goal of the season. The EC defense would shut down the Continentals offense giving them only three opportunities for shots on goal.
In the third period Hamilton would get a good opportunity to cut their deficit to 2-1, but
Lisa Marshall '14 (Powhatan, VA -- Wayne State University) saved a wrist shot by Riley Smith that deflected off an Elmira defender to preserve the lead. In the period EC's offense would soon heat up scoring four straight goals in just under six minutes of play. The first of the four scores was at the 10:12 mark when
Madison Johnston '14 (Toronto, ONT -- Toronto Aeros) passed the puck to
Tori Charron '14 (Goodwood, ONT -- Aurora Panthers) in front collecting the puck and firing a shot through traffic finding the back of the net. Charron would score again just 37 seconds later when she lifted a rebound off a shot by Johnston that was initially saved. After taking a feed from
Tanis Lamoureux '14 (Canton, MI -- Victory Honda), Johnston would score on a wrist shot from the left circle at the 13:06 mark.
Lauren Campbell '12 (Erie, PA -- Chatham University) would close the scoring with a power-play tally at the 16:09 mark being assisted by Ryan and Mitchell. Marshall would finish the game with 20 saves and post her fourth win as a starter as well as her first shutout of the season.
EC Women's Hockey returns to action Saturday, January 13 hosting the Knights of Neumann University in a conference showdown at 7pm.
