Morrisville, NY -- The Elmira College Men's Ice Hockey team registered five unanswered goals as they cruised past host Morrisville 5-2 Saturday evening. The win improves the Soaring Eagles to 11-5-1 overall, while the loss drops the Mustangs to 2-13-1.
Morrisville struck first as they scored two goals in the first 10 minutes of the game to open up a 2-0 lead. The Mustangs first score came at 7:35 when Rafal Plonski registered an unassisted marker. They followed that up three minutes later when James Jarvis fed Tom Longland to extend the lead. Elmira was able to add a goal of its own with three minutes remaining when
Brendan Sanders '12 (Mississauga, ONT -- Vaughan Vipers) scored, with
Christian Morissette '12 (Beaconsfield, QUE -- RPI) and
Jesper Strale '14 (Uppsala, Sweden -- Springfield Pic's) picking up the assists. EC outshot the Mustangs 15-10 in the opening period but still trailed 2-1.
Elmira established great momentum in the second period tying the game at 2-2 just two minutes in when
Josh Burnell '14 (Mississauga, ONT -- Georgetown Raiders) scored a power-play marker off a pass from
Kevin Willer '12 (Toronto, ONT -- North York Rangers). The two teams played back-and-forth the rest of the period until
Colin Hoey '13 (Doylestown, PA -- New England Huskies) cashed in on an unassisted goal 17 minutes in to break the tie, giving EC its first lead of the game.
The Purple and Gold sustained its momentum as halfway through the third period
D'Arcy Oakes '15 (Shanty Bay, ONT -- Quinnipiac University) tacked on an important insurance goal with
Sanders and
Rick Acorn '12 (Barrie, ONT -- Couchiching Terriers) tallying assists on the score.
Sanders added an empty-netter with eight seconds left for the 5-2 final, with
Martin Lee '12 (Toronto, ONT -- Vaughan Vipers) recording an assist on the score.
Elmira outshot the Mustangs heavily, recording nearly three times as many shots (62-23) in the contest. Colin Breen made 57 saves in net for Morrisville, while
Matt Milne '14 (Newmarket, ONT -- St. Catharines Falcons) made 21 stops for the Soaring Eagles.
EC returns to action Friday when they travel to take on Utica College at 7:00 p.m.
