Women’s Ice Hockey Downs Neumann 4-1

Pine Valley, NY – The Elmira College Women's Ice Hockey team scored four unanswered goals to down visiting Neumann University, 4-1, Saturday evening at the Murray Athletics Center in a 'Pink in the Rink' game to support breast cancer awareness. The win improves the Soaring Eagles to 12-1-1 overall and 7-0-0 in ECAC Women's West play, while the loss drops the Knights to 2-8-2 overall and 1-6-2 in conference competition.

Neumann got on the board first just under two minutes into the game when Kayla Dubowski fired a shot from the top of the left circle that found its way into the back of the net. Lynsey Spatola registered an assist on the score. Ten minutes later EC responded when Caitlin Metcalf '13 (Calgary, AB -- Edge School for Athletes) fed Lindsay Mitchell '12 (Arnold, MD -- NAHA) who took it around the back of the net and fed Tori Charron '14 (Goodwood, ONT -- Aurora Panthers) who was sitting in front of the net. Charron knocked it home to tie the game at 1-1 at the 11:31 mark, as the teams remained tied as play turned to the second period.

The Purple and Gold got on the board 4:52 into the second period when Metcalf struck, this time with Charron and Mitchell tallying assists on the marker. Just over 10 minutes later EC tacked on its second score of the period, increasing its lead to 3-1. Classmate Brooke Wilgosh '15 (Regina, SK – Notre Dame Hounds) fed Ashley Ryan '15 (North Chili, NY -- Rochester Edge) for an important insurance goal, creating some separation. Neither team could find the back of the net again until Ryan found the back of the net on the empty-netter with 20 seconds left. Katy Walker '12 (Edmonds, WA -- Colorado Select) recorded an assist on the score.

The Soaring Eagles outshot the Knights 48-25 in the contest, generating numerous scoring opportunities. Lauren Sullivan '13 (Toronto, ONT -- Markham-Stouffville) made 24 saves between the pipes for Elmira, while Shannon Donnely stopped 44 shots for Neumann.

EC will host the Knights again tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. to cap off the weekend series.
