Pine Valley, NY – The Elmira College Women's Ice Hockey team scored four unanswered goals to down visiting Neumann University, 4-1, Sunday afternoon at the Murray Athletics Center. The win improves the Soaring Eagles to 13-1-1 overall and 8-0-0 in ECAC West play, while the loss drops the Knights to 2-9-2 overall and 1-7-2 in conference competition.
Neumann struck first 2:14 into the first period when Ang Gilmour crossed the puck from the right corner in front of the net where Khristine Acosta initially poked a shot that was stopped by
Lisa Marshall '14 (Powhatan, VA -- Wayne State University). However, Acosta was able to convert on a second chance off the rebound. Elmira had back-to-back chances on the power play to tie the game, but was unable to convert as the Knight penalty kill held strong. EC kept the deficit at just one as it closed out the first period by killing a 5-on-3 power play for Neumann.
Neither team could find the net through the first half of the second frame as they traded offensive scoring chances. Twelve minutes in
Madison Johnston '13 (Toronto, ONT -- Toronto Aeros) took a shot from the left circle that found teammate
Lindsay Mitchell '12 (Arnold, MD -- NAHA) at the left post. She shot the puck off the post before regrouping, and feeding the puck across the front of net where
Brooke Wilgosh '15 (Regina, SK -- Notre Dame Hounds) knocked it home to tie the game at one all. With just under 30 seconds left
Alex Bresler '12 (Golden, CO -- Colorado Select) tallied the eventual game-winning goal off the feed from
Ella Stewart '14 (Mississauga, ONT -- Notre Dame Hounds) and Mitchell. EC doubled up the Knights in the second period, outshooting them 16-8, and outscoring them 2-0.
The two teams played most of the third period scoreless until the final minutes when Marshall played a quick outlet pass to Mitchell who flicked it from center ice to a cutting
Tori Charron '14 (Goodwood, ONT -- Aurora Panthers) at the blue line. Charron fired a shot on net that deflected off the chest of Knight goaltender Shannon Donnelly and over her right shoulder into the back of the net. The score with just over three minutes remaining helped to seal the win for the Purple and Gold. Mitchell then added an empty-netter with one minute remaining off a pass from
Caitlin Metcalf '13 (Calgary, AB -- Edge School for Athletes). Elmira outshot Neumann 41-25 in the contest. Donnelly stopped 37 shots in net for the Knights, while Marshall made 24 saves, including an assist in net for the Soaring Eagles. EC returns to action Friday when they travel to take on Chatham University at 8:00 p.m.
