Women’s Ice Hockey Controls Cougars in Second Straight Shutout

Pittsburgh, PA – The Elmira College Women's Ice Hockey team scores six goals in first period and holds off Chatham University for a 10-0 shutout Saturday afternoon at the McKnight Hockey Center. The win improves the Soaring Eagles to 15-1-1 overall and 10-0-0 in ECAC West play, while the loss drops the Cougars to 3-10-2 overall and 0-10-0 in conference competition.

In the first period EC started scoring early and made sure Chatham would not get any chances to score. Alex Bresler '12 (Golden, CO -- Colorado Select) would start the scoring at the 7:42 minute mark off EC's first power play of the game. Assisting on the play were Lindsay Mitchell '12 (Arnold, MD -- NAHA) and Madison Johnston '13 (Toronto, ONT -- Toronto Aeros). Two minutes later in the period Brooke Wilgosh '15 (Regina, SK -- Notre Dame Hounds) would score her first goal of the game being assisted by Maddy Charbonneau '14 (Greely, CO -- Colorado Select) and Alex McPhail '12 (Oakville, ONT -- Toronto Aeros). Around the 13th minute of the period Wilgosh would score her second goal of the game being assisted by Katy Walker '12 (Edmonds, WA -- Colorado Select). Exactly three minutes later Katie Gaskin '14 (Pickering, ONT -- Wayne State University) would score on the power play recording her second goal of the season and EC's fourth goal of the game. Assisting on her goal was Johnston and Jocelynne Hudgins '14 (Bowmanville, ONT -- Durham West). About five seconds later Torri Charron '14 (Goodwood, ONT -- Aurora Panthers) would score her first goal of the game being assisted by Tanis Lamoureux '14 (Canton, MI -- Victory Honda). To end the period EC's Lauren Campbell '12 (Erie, PA -- Chatham University) would convert her fifth goal of the season with Bresler assisting on the play. EC would outshoot the Cougars 36-12 at the end of the period and take a 6-0 lead.

In the second period EC went right back to work on the offensive side scoring a goal just 24 seconds in. The score came on an EC power play with Charbonneau recording the goal while Cassidy Delainey '15 (Edmonton, AB -- Edmonton Thunder) and Lindsay Burrows '15 (Stouffville, ONT -- Whitby Wolves) were credited with the assists. About four minutes later EC would score once again with Charron recording her second goal of the game as Campbell and Ashley Ryan '15 (North Chili, NY -- Rochester Edge) got the assists. A little over halfway through the period the Soaring Eagles would score its ninth goal with Burrows. This would be Burrows' first goal of the season as a Soaring Eagle and helping her on the play were Charron and Campbell. EC would lead 9-0 at the end of the second with Chatham not having any answer for EC's offense. In the final period EC would score one extra goal at the 15:48 mark with Briana Saltstone '14 (North Bay, ONT -- Southwest Wildcats) tallying the score. Arden Cowley '15 (Edmonton, AB -- Warner Hockey School) and Hudgins would be credited with the assists.


In the game EC would outshoot the Cougars 78-36 with the team converting 3-of-5 goals on power play opportunities. Sam Maguire '13 (Findlay, OH -- Ohio Flames) in the net for the Soaring Eagles made 36 saves and earned her second straight shutout. Kaitlynn Smith and Megan Buchanan would play in the net for the Cougars. Smith would make 30 saves, while Buchanan would make 38 saves.

The Purple and Gold return to action Saturday, January 28th at home against tough conference opponent Plattsburgh State with first place in the conference on the line.
