Men’s Ice Hockey Ties in First Game of New Year

Northfield, VT – The EC Men's Ice Hockey team led early, but was unable to hold off the Fitchburg State Falcons as the two teams played to a 1-1 tie Friday evening at the Norwich Holiday Tournament. The game would result in a shootout where the Falcons would win 2-1 in three rounds and move onto the Championship game. The Falcons move to 3-6-2 overall, while the Soaring Eagles move to 7-5-1 overall.
 
The game would be scoreless throughout the first period with not many opportunities being giving to the offense. EC would get several opportunities to score in the first period outshooting the Falcons 15-3. The Soaring Eagles would make the most of its opportunities when Matt Owczarczak '14 (West Seneca, NY -- Buffalo Jr. Sabres) would score the first goal of the game at the 16:02 mark of the first period. Assisting on the play was Brendan Sanders '12 (Mississauga, ONT -- Vaughan Vipers). The Falcons would respond to EC's goal 2:26 into the second period with Travis Bertolotti assisting teammate Thomas McAleer for the game tying goal. The game would stay tied throughout the third period and overtime period. To move onto the championship round the game would be decided in a shootout where the Falcons would win 2-1. Darren MacDonald '13 (Stittsville, ONT -- Nepean Raiders) recorded 15 saves in net for the Soaring Eagles, while Bobby Leiser recorded 47 saves in net for the Falcons.
 
The Soaring Eagles will play again tomorrow Saturday, January 7th against SUNY Morrisville or Norwich University for a shot at third place in the Norwich Holiday Tournament.
