Northfield, VT – The EC Women's Hockey took an early lead, but could not hold off the No. 1 Norwich University Cadets late in the third period resulting in a 2-2 tie Saturday afternoon in the East-West Women's Hockey Classic. Both teams move to 0-0-1 on the season.
In the beginning the No. 7 Soaring Eagles dominated and five minutes in it converted on the first power play of the game.
Caitlin Metcalf '13 passed it up to
Olivia Nystrom '16 where she created the opening for
Madison Johnston '13 to score giving EC a 1-0 lead. Although the Cadets would outshoot the Soaring Eagles 7-6 the score remained 1-0 at end of the first period.
At the 8:22 minute mark of the second period,
Nystrom recorded her first career goal as a Soaring Eagle and gave EC a 2-0 lead. The Cadets looked for opportunities to score, but the Soaring Eagle defense played strong and held the 2-0 lead at the end of the second.
The Cadets would finally convert a goal 21 seconds into the third period with Brittany Sharman assisting Renee Lortie on the play. Later in the period the Cadets tied it up on a power play goal scored by Kayla Parsons and Lucie Manhartova assisting on the play. Both teams had more opportunities to score before the end of regulation, but no one could transfigure a goal forcing overtime.
In overtime both teams continued to fight hard and hoped to get a shot in the back of the net. However, neither team was able to get the game winner resulting in a 2-2 tie.
Lauren Sullivan '13 played all 65 minutes in net for EC finishing with 23 saves, while Lorie Carrier played all game for Norwich finishing with 22 saves.
The Purple and Gold will return to action tomorrow when they face Manahattanville College at the East-West Women's Hockey Classic. The game is set to start at 1:00 p.m.
