Women’s Hockey Uses Strong Third Period to Down Utica 4-1

Utica, NY – The Elmira College Women's Ice Hockey team used three third period scores to upend host Utica 4-1 Saturday evening on the road. The win improves the Soaring Eagles to 5-0-1 overall and 4-0-0 in ECAC West play, while the loss drops the Pioneers to 1-3-0 overall and in conference competition.
 
At the 7:51 mark of the first period the Purple and Gold got on the board when Brooke Wilgosh '15 converted off passes from Caitlin Metcalf '13 and Cassidy Delainey '15. Elmira outshot Utica 9-8 in the opening period taking a 1-0 lead into intermission.
 
With just over two minutes left in the second period Megan Myers scored an unassisted goal for the Pioneers to even the tilt at one. Utica held a slim 7-6 shots edge in the second period.
 
Three minutes into the third frame Ashton Hogan '15 scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season off a pass from Olivia Nystrom '16, her team-leading fifth helper. Less than a minute later Metcalf fed classmate Amber Tirri '13 for her first marker of the young season. Midway through the period Metcalf tacked on an insurance goal with the skater advantage for her third point of the contest. Katie Gaskin '14 was credited with an assist on the score.
 
Lauren Sullivan '13 stopped 19 shots as she improved to 3-0-1 on the season, while Jennifer Hamel made 21 saves in the loss for the Pioneers.
 
The EC Women's Hockey team returns home next weekend as they host SUNY Potsdam for a weekend series starting with a 7:00 p.m. puck drop Friday at the Murray Athletic Center.
