Utica, NY – The EC Men's Ice Hockey team scored five goals in the first two periods to dominate, 7-4, over the No. 9 nationally ranked Utica College Pioneers Saturday evening in Utica. With the win the Soaring Eagles improve to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in ECAC West action, while the Pioneers fall to 5-2 overall and 2-2 in conference play.
The Soaring Eagles controlled the game from the start.
Brian Depp '16 recorded his first short-handed goal as a Soaring Eagle and the first score of the night at the 13:28 mark of the first period. Near the 18 minute mark
Tyler Campbell '13 registered a goal to put EC up 2-0, while
Jay Kenney '15 and
Nick Angelo '16 recorded assists.
Early in the second period
Carter Shinkaruk '16 registered two goals, with
Steve Carlette '16 assisting on the second goal, to put EC up 4-0. At the 11:21 mark
Michael Collins '16 passed it
Jesper Strale '14 who fed it to
Josh Burnell '15 and put it in the back of the net for the 5-0 lead. The Pioneers finally stepped up its play late in the period to score two goals at the 14:03 and 17:11 marks to narrow down the lead.
At the 8:36 mark in the third period Utica cut into the EC lead again when Eric Peterson scored a goal to make it 5-3. Rob Morton and Josh Schmitt assisted on the play. Less than a minute later EC stretched out its lead when
D'Arcy Oakes '13 registered a goal with
Burnell and
Andrew Ciampichini '15 assisting on the play. 45 seconds later the Pioneers came back with another score when Nick Miglio and Cody Adams assisted Jordan Hobaica on the goal. However, EC would hold on late and secure the 7-4 win when
Taylor Love '16 recorded an empty net goal at the 19:41 mark.
Shinkaruk assisted on the play.
Ryan deMelo '15 earned the win in net for EC making a career high 38 stops. Mike Taffe and Nick Therrien split time in net for the Pioneers. Taffe played the first 23 minutes making five stops, while Therrien played the last 36 minutes making 16 stops.
