Women’s Basketball Earns First Win on the Road at Wells

Aurora, NY – The Elmira College Women's Basketball team used an impressive team effort to down host Wells College, 70-47, Sunday afternoon at Farenthold Fieldhouse. The win improves the Soaring Eagles to 1-2, while the loss drops the Express to 1-2.
 
EC shot out to a quick 10-2 start after three minutes of play. The contest was knotted at 17 apiece with just less than nine minutes remaining in the opening half. The Purple and Gold closed the stanza on a 16-6 run to open up a 10-point lead at 33-23 at intermission.
 
The Soaring Eagles held their largest lead of the contest at 62-39, a 23-point advantage, with six minutes remaining to cruise in the second half to a 69-47 victory.
 
Liz Forrest '14 paced three players in double figures in the scoring column for Elmira. She finished with 16 points and six rebounds on just six shot attempts. She converted four of those attempts including her only attempt from downtown. Meanwhile, Forrest was a perfect 7-for-7 from the charity stripe and five of her six boards came on the offensive glass. Alex Balara '15 added 14 points pumping in three of her five shots from distance. Jessica Zoltowski '14 added 12 points for the Purple and Gold, while Meghan Loya '16 hauled in six rebounds.
 
Ashley Roser tallied game-highs of 24 points and 13 rebounds, shooting 75 percent from the field for the Express. She added three assists, four blocks and two steals. Lindsay Achzet as the only other Wells player to finish in double figures with 10 points.
 
Elmira held a distinct 40-28 edge in rebounding and made a living at the free throw line where it went 17-for-24. Meanwhile, the Express only got to the charity stripe 13 times converting on just seven of those tries. EC held the advantage in points off turnovers (29-17), second chance points (21-9), and bench points (21-9).
 
The EC Women's Basketball team returns home Tuesday for a 7:00 p.m. non-conference tilt with Sage Colleges in Speidel Gymnasium.
