Pine Valley, NY – The EC Men's Ice Hockey team suffered a tough 5-2 loss to the Manhattanville College Valiants Friday evening at the Murray Athletic Center. With the win the Valiants improve to 6-2-1 and 3-1-1 in ECAC action, while the Soaring Eagles fall to 4-4-0 and 2-3-0 in conference play.
In the beginning the Valiants came out ready to go getting on the board early in the first period. At the 1:45 marker Luc Van Natter crossed it to Scott Hudson for the score to go up 1-0. At the 11 minute mark Van Natter stepped up again for the Valiants and scored the second goal of the game on a breakaway opportunity. EC would finally respond at the 15:15 mark when
Michael Collins '16 passed it along boards to
Jesper Strale '14 who crossed it towards the middle for
Greg Whittle '16 who put it in the back of net. The score remained 2-1 in favor of the Valiants at the end of the first period.
In the second period the game became tight with both teams getting few opportunities to score on the offensive side.
Andrew Ciampichini '15 got the best opportunity for the Soaring Eagles to score, but the Valiants goaltender Brian Fleming stepped up and made a huge save the stop the surge. The Valiants would make the best of its opportunity to score, with one second left in the period, when Adam Young scored from the point putting it right passed
Ryan deMelo '15. Assisting on the play were Luke Challier and Anton Racklin.
Manhattanville added to its lead in the final period at the 7:31 minute mark when Mark Rivera passed it across to Brendan Turner who put it in the back of the net. Although the score was 4-1, EC did not give up putting in a little more effort in each time. The Soaring Eagles were able to cut into the Manhattanville lead at the 17:26 mark when
Mark Morikawa '13 passed it out to
Carter Shinkaruk '16 who took a slap shot passed Fleming's stick side for the goal. Near the end of regulation the Valiants were able to seal the deal with an empty net goal scored by Hudson and Van Natter assisting on the play. Brian Fleming earned the win for the Valiants making 30 saves on the night, while
deMelo suffered the loss making seven saves.
The EC Men's Hockey team will return to action tomorrow to face off with the Valiants in game two at the Murray Athletic Center. Game is set to start at 7:00 p.m.
