Thannhauser’s 21 Points Lead Women’s Basketball Past Clarkson for Third Straight Win

Potsdam, NY – Maria Thannhauser '14 tallied a game-high 21 points as the Elmira College Women's Basketball won its third straight contest defeating host Clarkson University 62-46 Friday evening in Alumni Gymnasium. The win brings the Soaring Eagles to a game above .500 at 3-2, while the loss drops the Golden Knights to 1-4.

Elmira got off to a 6-0 start after two Thannhauser jumpers and a Meghan Loya '16 lay-in. The Soaring Eagles led by at least four points the remainder of the contest. EC held an 18-11 advantage with eight minutes remaining and closed the first half on a 17-8 spurt to take a 35-19 edge into intermission.

In the second half the Soaring Eagle lead ballooned to 26 points on two occasions, the first coming with 7:06 remaining in the contest after  a Jessica Zoltowski '14 trey from long distance. The Purple and Gold continued to hit on all cylinders as they closed out the 62-46 victory.

Thannhauser paced Elmira with 21 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals while shooting a blistering 9-for-12 from the field. Zoltowski added 17 points, five rebounds and three assists, while Loya registered eight points on 4-for-7 shooting along with five boards. Ashley Loggins and Leighann Tomita led the Clarkson attack with 19 and 15 points, respectively.

The Soaring Eagles shot 40 percent from the field compared to just 31 percent for the Golden Knights. EC held a huge 41-26 edge in rebounding including doubling up Clarkson on the offensive glass 12-6, which led to a 13-6 second chance points advantage.

The Women's Basketball team returns to action tomorrow when it travels to Canton, NY to take on St. Lawrence University starting at 2:00 p.m.
