Pine Valley, NY – The EC Women's Ice Hockey team won in dominating fashion over the Cortland State University Red Dragons, 5-0, Sunday afternoon at the Murray Athletic Center. The Soaring Eagles improve to 2-0-0 in ECAC West action and 3-0-1 overall, while the Red Dragons fall to 0-2-0 in conference play and 0-4-0 overall.
Madison Johnston '13 stepped up early for the Soaring Eagles and scored two goals in the first period. Her first goal came 3:40 into the game when
Phoebe Piku '16 passed it across to
Johnston who one-timed it into the back of the net. Her second score came at the 15:48 mark on an EC power play when she took a slap shot from the point and put it in the goal. Assisting on the play were
Olivia Nystrom '16 and
Tanis Lamoureux '14.
In the second period the Soaring Eagles continued to control, but no one was able to score until the 19:03 mark.
Mary-Kate Gellerman '13 took a shot just wide of the goal then
Brooke Wilgosh '15 re-gathered the puck and shot it, but Cortland goalie Deanna Meunier was there to make the save. However, off the save
Lamoureux got the puck and one-timed it home for the 3-0 lead.
In the final period of play the Purple and Gold stretched out its lead again in the 15th minute. At the 15:02 mark
Ella Stewart '14 passed it across to
Ashton Hogan '15 who passed it to the top for
Piku who took a slap shot to the glove side of Meunier for the score. Eight seconds later EC came back with another score when
Lamoureux connected on the goal with
Johnston and
Ashley Ryan '15 assisting.
Lisa Marshall '14 finished the game in net for EC recording eight saves, while Meunier finished the game in net for Cortland recording 42 saves. The Purple and Gold will return to action Friday, November 9th when it hosts Utica College on “Pink the Rink” night at the Murray Athletic Center. Game is set to start at 7:00 p.m.
