Pine Valley, NY – The Elmira College Men's Ice Hockey team scored four unanswered goals to defeat visiting SUNY Fredonia, 4-1, Saturday evening at the Murray Athletic Center. The win salvages a weekend split and improves the Soaring Eagles to 5-6, while the loss drops the Blue Devils to 5-7.
Fredonia controlled the puck early but then Elmira earned a power play opportunity and moved the puck extremely well getting a number of shots on goal. However, after the Blue Devil penalty kill it was the visitors who got on the board first at the 7:46 mark of the opening period. Brett Mueller took an initial shot that was saved and Alex Perkins quickly put the rebound home past the glove side of EC goaltender
Darren MacDonald '13.
With just over a minute remaining Elmira tied the game at one all with the extra skater advantage.
Eric David '15 took an initial shot from the point that was redirected off the stick of
Andrew Ciampichini '15. Mark Friesen made the initial save for the Blue Devils but
Brian Depp '16 corralled the puck and beat Friesen stick side for the power play goal. Elmira held a slim 10-9 shots advantage as the teams were tied at 1-1 heading into the first intermission.
Just 15 seconds into the second frame Elmira took its first lead of the game when
Ciampichini scored in a crowd out in front of goal.
Liam Burtt '16 and
Josh Burnell '15 were credited with assists on the score. The Purple and Gold added its third consecutive score one minute later when
Michael Collins '16 lit the lamp on a power play goal beating Friesen over his left shoulder.
D'Arcy Oakes '13 and
Greg Whittle '16 notched assists on the marker.
The Soaring Eagles continued their remarkable play adding a fourth goal when
Mark Morikawa '13 scored off assists from
Nick Angelo '16 and
Taylor Love '16. EC held a 13-11 shots advantage taking a 4-1 lead into the third period.
The third period was a back-and-forth affair as neither team found the back of the net and Elmira prevailed with the 4-1 victory. The Blue Devils held a 17-12 edge in shots in the third period and 37-35 overall.
MacDonald came up huge stopping 36 shots in the win for Elmira, while Friesen made 31 saves for Fredonia. The power play opportunities proved crucial as EC went 2-for-4, while the Blue Devils were 0-for-5 with the extra skater.
The Men's Hockey team has nearly three weeks off before it takes part in the Cardinal Classic in Plattsburgh, NY on December 28th and 29th. Elmira takes on Amherst at 4:00 p.m. on the 28th.
