Field Hockey Puts Up Fight in 4-1 Loss to #20 Rochester

Kraynak Scores First Career Goal

Box Score

Rochester, NY – The Elmira College Field Hockey team came to play losing by only three goals, 4-1, to host #20 University of Rochester Wednesday afternoon at Edwin Fauver Stadium. The win improves the Yellowjackets to 6-0 overall, while the loss drops Elmira to 0-2.

Rochester got on the board in the 14th minute when Michelle Relin tapped in a shot from the right wing to take an early 1-0 lead. The Purple and Gold defense along with junior goalie Lauren Thomas held strong to keep the game close. Despite EC being outshot 16-5 in the first half Thomas made seven saves as the Yellowjackets Maura O'Conor added a second score before the half to make it 2-0 at intermission.

Out of the halftime break the Soaring Eagles continued to fight trying to get within striking distance. In the 42nd minute Rochester's Shelby Hall made a 35-yard solo run from midfield and lined the ball under Thomas' pads to make it 3-0. The Yellowjackets added another score to break open a 4-0 lead. EC continued to battle with one of the nation's elite and broke through in the 67th minute when rookie Becca Kraynak '16 slid a shot from the right wing into the lower left hand corner beating Rochester netminder Madison Wagner.

Ten minutes prior to the Kraynak score, with Rochester up 3-0, Elmira was denied a score through a mix of poor luck and a solid Yellowjacket defensive effort. After a penalty corner, a shot by Erin Duffy '14 hit the left post. It rolled along the goal line and was scrambled away by Rochester's Kathryn Montgomery just before it rolled into the net.

Despite the loss the Purple and Gold had a strong game from its defense and particularly Thomas. She finished with a remarkable 20 saves in net, while Wagner stopped three shots for the Yellowjackets. Alexa Freedman and Montgomery each had a defensive save for Rochester.

Kraynak, Duffy, Allie Maffei '13, Sarah Watts '15, McKenna Light '14 and Shannon Nelligan '14 all recorded shots on goal for Elmira.

The EC Field Hockey team returns to action this weekend for two contests. The Soaring Eagles hit the road Saturday taking on St. John Fisher College at noon, before returning home Sunday for its first home contest of the season against Anna Maria College. Sunday's home opener starts at 1:00 p.m. at the Murray Athletic Center.
