Women’s Soccer Falls to #9/12 Bombers in Conference Opener

Ithaca, NY – The Elmira College Women's Soccer team fell on the road 6-0 to Ithaca College Wednesday afternoon at Carp Wood Field. The win improves the Bombers, who are ranked ninth nationally by D3soccer.com and 12th by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, to 5-0 overall and 1-0 in Empire 8 play. The loss drops the Soaring Eagles to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in conference competition.

Ithaca was ahead from the start as Rachael Palladino found the back of the net in the opening 30 seconds when she took a pass from Anna Gray and carried it past an EC defender putting a shot out of the reach of Soaring Eagle goalkeeper Megan Lowe '13. In the 13th minute Elmira had a golden chance to knot the game at one when Emily Kelly '14 took on a charging Ithaca keeper and got around the netminder but missed just wide.

In the 22nd minute Ithaca extended its lead when Ellyn Grant-Keane fed Meredith Jones who found the back of the net. The Bombers added another goal before halftime when Kelsey King crossed the ball into the box. Initially Lowe made the save, but Jackie Rodabaugh banged home the rebound for the 3-0 halftime lead.

The Purple and Gold had just one shot attempt after halftime as the nationally-ranked Bombers continued to pound the EC defense nailing another 13 shots along with their 14 first half attempts. At the 60 minute mark Palladino recorded her fifth goal of the season and second of the game. Jessie Warren and Libby McNamara would later add scores for the Bombers.

Kelly, Kimi Girmus '16, Janine Swanson '14 and Emily Karpinski '14 registered shots in the match for Elmira. Lowe stopped five shots in goal for EC, and Camilla Greeby '15 replaced her recording just over 31 minutes of play, making three saves. Becca Salant made one save for Ithaca, while Beth Coppolecchia and Becca Lewis didn't face any shots on target in relief for the Bombers.

The EC Women's Soccer team returns to Campus Field for a weekend home stand starting Saturday when they square off with non-conference foe Clarkson at 2:00 p.m. The Soaring Eagles continue the weekend with a 1:00 p.m. Sunday tilt with St. Lawrence.
