Field Hockey Struggles in Empire 8 Opener

Box Score Pittsford, NY -- The Elmira College Field Hockey team came into the game today seeking their first win of the year as they traveled to take on St. John Fisher College but were unsuccessful, falling 4-0 to the Cardinals. The win improves the Cardinals to 2-5 overall and 0-1 in Empire 8 play, while the loss drops the Soaring Eagles to 0-3 overall and 0-1 in conference competition.

Fisher got the scoring started early when Marissa Vedella scored off of a rebound in front of the goal just over five minutes into the game. The rest of the half would provide opportunities for both teams to score, but each goalie played extremely well, saving each shot sent on goal. The Cardinals would take a 1-0 lead into halftime.

The Soaring Eagles were able to keep it a one goal game for a good portion of the second half but were unable to capitalize on their chances. Two goals by the Cardinals within five minutes by Kailen Maynard and Vedella extended the lead to 3-0 and put the pressure on Elmira to play catch-up. A final goal in the 69th minute sealed the St. John Fisher victory.

The Soaring Eagles tallied ten shots on goal with four coming from junior forward McKenna Light '14 and another three from freshman forward Alli Gilbert '16. Lauren Thomas '14 recorded ten saves in goal for the Purple and Gold and Kourtny Schwerdtman '15 appeared for the final five minutes. Danielle Famolaro stopped nine shots in between the pipes for Fisher.

The Field Hockey team will look to get their first win of the year when they return home to play Anna Maria College tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. at the Murray Athletic Center.
