Women’s Soccer Falls Short of Comeback to Saints

Box Score Elmira, NY – The Elmira College Women's Soccer team fell just short, 3-2, of completing a comeback against the Saints of St. Lawrence University Sunday afternoon at Campus Field. The Saints improve to 5-1-1 overall, while the Soaring Eagles fall to 1-4-1 overall.

In the first half, the Saints controlled the tempo outshooting and outscoring the Soaring Eagles. The Saints got on the board at the 14th and 16th minutes with Stephanie Sayward and Julia Friesen each scoring a goal. The score remained 2-0 in favor of St. Lawrence at halftime, but EC looked to even the score in the second half.

In the second half the score stayed 2-0 until the 71st minute when Emily Kelly '14 passed it up to Emily Karpinski '14about 18 yards out. Karpinski took the ball and shot it top center under the crossbar to beat the Saints goalkeeper Kelsey West. In the 73rd minute St. Lawrence expanded its lead to 3-1 when Emily DePoy beat Megan Lowe '13 in the top right corner. However, the Soaring Eagles came right back in the 76th minute when Karpinski passed it up to Janine Swanson '14. Swanson dribbled the ball down the field and got around West to make the score 3-2. EC looked to even up the score with about five minutes of play left, but they could not convert before the end of regulation. Lowe finished the game in net for EC with eight saves, while West finished in net for Saints with four saves.

The Purple and Gold squad will look to bounce back Wednesday, September 19th when they travel to Alfred University in an Empire 8 conference showdown. Game is set to start at 7:00 p.m.
