Box Score Elmira, NY – The Elmira College Women's Soccer team fell just short of a late comeback bid falling 2-1 to the visiting University of Pittsburgh at Bradford Sunday afternoon on Campus Field in Elmira. The win improves the Panthers to 2-0, while the loss drops the Soaring Eagles to 0-1.
The scoring got started just over eight minutes in when Pitt Bradford's Ursula Maillet bent a corner kick just inside the post beating EC keeper
Megan Lowe'13 to open up an early one goal margin. The Panthers outshot the Purple and Gold 6-3 in the opening half to take a 1-0 lead into intermission.
The tides shifted in the second stanza as Elmira controlled possession and put together numerous scoring opportunities using precision passes to break their way through the Panther defense. However, EC struggled in the final stages of its build ups unable to consistently convert its opportunities. In the final 45 minutes the Soaring Eagles outshot Pitt Bradford 13-5 and held a 5-2 shots on goal advantage.
In the 66
th minute an EC turnover in its defensive end led to a Maggie Boehler goal that gave the Panthers a 2-0 cushion. The Purple and Gold continued to battle and finally converted a goal off a nice combination play between
Emily Kelly '14 and
Caitlyn Criscuolo '14.
Kelly threaded a through ball to
Criscuolo who made a quick cutback to beat her defender and drilled a low liner past Panther goalkeeper Alisa Cornell. Elmira increased the pressure looking for the equalizer and nearly found it as the seconds ticked down, but a
Kelly header sailed just wide, leading to the 2-1 final.
Criscuolo led the Soaring Eagles with two shots on goal, while
Janine Swanson '14,
Mollie Hamilton '15,
Kelsie DeKarski '14 and
Natty Vogler '13 each recorded one shot on net apiece. Boehler paced the Panther attack with two shots on goal, while three others registered one shot on net.
Lowe stopped three shots in net for Elmira, while Cornell made five saves for Pitt Bradford.
The Elmira College Women's Soccer team returns to the pitch on Saturday when they travel to Castleton, VT to take part in the Castleton State Tournament. The Soaring Eagles will square off with Westfield State University at 3:30 p.m.
