Swanson Scores as Women’s Soccer Blanks Utica 1-0

Box Score

Utica, NY – Janine Swanson '14 scored the lone goal of the night as the Elmira College Women's Soccer team shut out host Utica 1-0 Wednesday evening. The win improves the Soaring Eagles to 3-5-1 overall and 2-1-0 in Empire 8 play, while the loss drops the Pioneers to 6-3-0 overall and 0-2-0 in conference competition.

Both teams played to a scoreless first half as Elmira held a slim 8-7 shots and 5-4 shots on goal advantage. The second half would prove to be a completely different story as the Purple and Gold dominated shots (13-3) and shots on goal (7-3).

The Soaring Eagles finally broke through in the 66th minute when Swanson controlled a rebound off an initial shot and save, finding the top right corner of the goal for her second score of the season. Over the final 24 minutes Elmira kept up the offensive intensity looking for an insurance goal, while also shutting down the Pioneer front line.

Swanson, Mollie Hamilton '15 and Kelsey Kiel '13 recorded three shots on goal apiece, while Ellie Hamilton '13 placed two shots on target. Samantha Spohler paced the Pioneers with three shots on net.

Megan Lowe '13 stopped seven shots in net for Elmira, while Caitlyn Smith made 11 saves for Utica.

The EC Women's Soccer team returns to action Saturday when it hosts Nazareth College at 1:00 p.m. on Campus Field.
