Box Score 4 Hoboken, NJ – The Elmira College Women's Volleyball team had a tough weekend dropping all four of its matches at the Stevens Tournament on Friday and Saturday. The Purple and Gold fell to Baruch 3-0 (18-25, 10-25, 29-31) and Richard Stockton 3-1 (25-20, 23-25, 9-25, 21-25) on Friday, before falling to the United States Coast Guard 3-0 (19-25, 22-25, 17-25) and Stevens 3-2 (25-21, 20-25, 23-25, 25-14, 9-15) on Saturday. With the four losses the Soaring Eagles now sit at 7-9 overall on the season.
Against Baruch, EC really struggled offensively as no one on the team finished with double digit kills and the team hit just .036 in the match.
Taryn Rumsey '14 (Mansfield, PA -- Mansfield) led Elmira with nine kills, while the team combined for 28 kills and 24 errors.
In its second match Friday the Soaring Eagles got off to a better start winning the opening set 25-20, while finishing with 12 kills to just four errors. However, over the final three sets EC had 27 kills compared with 23 errors, which ultimately led to their defeat.
Rumsey once again paced the Purple and Gold with 16 kills and seven digs.
Sasha Zavadska '13 (Bratislava, SVK -- The British School) added 11 kills and a team-high 13 digs, while
Catherine Miller '14 (Pittsburgh, PA -- Penn Hills) tallied 11 digs.
The Soaring Eagles headed into day two of the tournament looking to right the ship, but struggled once again against quality competition as it got swept by the United States Coast Guard. EC again hit a minimal 0.50 with 27 kills compared to 21 errors. For the second time in two days no Elmira player had double digit kills.
Zavadska led EC with nine kills and 10 digs, while
Rumsey finished with seven kills and nine digs.
Miller recorded a team-high 15 digs.
Elmira's best match of the weekend came against host and conference rival Stevens. Despite falling in a thrilling five sets, the team finished off the two day tournament strong hitting .285 as a team and more than doubling its kills to errors ratio (58-23).
Zavadska and
Rumsey both finished with double-doubles of 24 kills, 10 digs and 16 kills, 10 digs, respectively.
Molly Short '13 (Sterling, CO -- Sterling) remarkably reached the half century mark as she dished out 50 assists.
The Elmira College Women's Volleyball team returns to Hoboken, NJ again next weekend for the second weekend of the Empire 8 Crossover. EC takes on Stevens Friday at 4:30, Hartwick Saturday at 10:00 a.m. and Ithaca Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
