Pine Valley, NY – Taylor Steadman '16 recorded her first hat trick as the EC Women's Ice Hockey team cruised to a 9-0 victory over Chatham University Saturday afternoon in the Murray Athletic Center. The third-ranked Soaring Eagles improve to 15-1-1 overall and 10-0-0 in ECAC West action, while the Cougars fall to 1-11-0 overall and 0-8-0 in conference play.
In the first period of action EC controlled the game once again outshooting the Cougars 21-3. However, the Cougars played outstanding defense and held the Soaring Eagles to one goal. At the 3:51 mark of the period
Mary-Kate Gellerman '13 passed it up to
Jocelynne Hudgins '14 who then crossed it to
Steadman for her first goal of the night.
The second period continued to go EC's way as they broke open the game by scoring three more goals to take a 4-0 lead. At the 6:11 mark
Cassidy Delainey '15 passed it up to
Erin Weston '15 who put the slap shot past the Chatham goaltender's glove side. At the 13:23 mark
Caitlin Metcalf '13 took the puck around back of the goal finding
Ashton Hogan '15 who put it in the back of net. With 54 seconds left in the period
Gellerman passed it up the ice to
Delainey who found the back of the net.
In the third period EC exploded for five more goals to seal off the victory.
Steadman recorded her second goal of the game 24 seconds into the third period with
Hudgins assisting on the play. At the 6:16 mark of the period
Gellerman took a slap shot and
Ashley Ryan '15 tipped it in for the score. 68 seconds later
Brooke Wilgosh '15 fed classmate
Delainey for her second goal of the game. The Purple and Gold did not score again until there was 59 seconds left in the period when
Phoebe Piku '16 crossed it to
Steadman for her third score of the afternoon. To end the game
Madison Johnston '13 fed it up to
Audrey Juneau '16 who registered the final goal of the game.
EC were able to outshoot the Cougars 59-10 and earn its ninth shutout on the season.
Lisa Marshall '14, earning her third shutout this year, recorded 10 saves between the pipes. Megan Buchanan and Kaitlynn Smith split time in net for Chatham. Buchanan started the game recording 42 total saves, while Smith ended the game recording eight saves.
The Soaring Eagles will return to action next Saturday, January 19 and Sunday, Sunday, January 20 when it travels upstate New York to take on No. 1 Plattsburgh State University. Saturday's game is set to start at 7:00 p.m., while Sunday's game is set to start at 3:00 p.m.
