Women’s Basketball Drops Third Straight at Utica

Utica, NY – The Elmira College Women's Basketball team fell on the road, 67-51, Saturday afternoon at the Harold T. Clark Athletic Center. The win improves the Pioneers to 9-8 overall and 5-2 in Empire 8 play, while the loss drops the Soaring Eagles to 5-11 overall and 1-5 in conference competition.
 
The game got off to a slow start offensively as Utica held a slim 12-9 lead midway through the opening half. The Pioneers used a 9-2 run over the next four minutes to open up a 21-11 lead and took a 33-19 edge into intermission. Raquel Baudanza had nine points and two treys in the opening half for Utica.
 
EC used a 10-4 spurt out of intermission to get within 37-29 after four minutes of play in the second half. However, that was as close as the Soaring Eagles would get as Utica was hitting on all cylinders in the final 20 minutes. The hosts extended the lead to as much as 24 points with just less than three minutes remaining. Elmira closed the game on a 13-5 run for the 67-51 final.
 
Jessica Zoltowski '14 paced the Purple and Gold with 22 points, seven rebounds, and three steals while shooting 6-for-14 from the field and 8-for-9 from the free throw line. Liz Forrest '14 finished with eight points and eight rebounds, while Maria Thannhauser '14 added nine points and five rebounds. Forrest shot 50 percent from the charity stripe and long distance.
 
Utica featured balanced scoring led by Meghan Fiore who tallied 17 pints and 13 rebounds. Baudanza finished with 15 points, while Mary Miceli added 12 in the scoring column. The hosts shot a remarkable 50 percent from the field and nailed 10 of their 15 attempts from downtown (67 percent). Meanwhile, EC shot just 31 percent from the floor and 32 percent from long distance.
 
The EC Women's Basketball team returns to action Tuesday when it hosts Houghton College at 6:00 p.m. in Speidel Gymnasium.
