Plattsburgh, NY – The EC Women's Ice Hockey team suffered its first conference loss, 4-1, to Plattsburgh State University Saturday evening at Stafford Ice Arena. The No. 1 Cardinals remain undefeated at 15-0-1 overall and 8-0-0 in conference play, while the No. 3 Soaring Eagles fall to 15-2-1 overall and 10-1-0 in ECAC West action.
In the first period of action the first-ranked Cardinals proved its dominance by outshooting the Soaring Eagles 16-6 and scoring the first goal of the game one minute and six seconds in. Allison Era registered the goal, while Bridget Balisy assisted on the play. At the 10:12 mark Plattsburgh took a 2-0 lead when Andrea Ziesmann converted a goal on the team's first power play of the game, while Emma Rutherford and Alyssa Parke assisted on the goal. The Soaring Eagles were able to respond later at the 18:31 mark when
Ashton Hogan '15 passed it up to
Samantha Curk '13 who put it into the back of the net making it 2-1 before the end of the period.
In the second period both teams fought well, but the Cardinals were able to stretch out its lead at the 11:15 mark when Parke took a slap shot to the top left corner just passing
Lauren Sullivan '13 for the score. Assisting on the goal were Caitlin Gilligan and Giovanna Senese. The score remained 3-1 at the end of the second period in favor of Plattsburgh.
In the final period of play it continued to be a battle with both defenses playing well and not allowing many shots on goal. However, the Cardinals were able to stretch out the lead and earn the win at the 16:50 mark when Morgan MacInnis passed it up to Shannon Stewart who put it in the back of net.
Sullivan played in net for EC making 27 saves, while Sydney Aveson played in net for Plattsburgh making 22 saves.
Both teams will return to the rink tomorrow in another conference showdown at the Stafford Ice Arena in Plattsburgh. The game will start at 3:00 p.m.
