Women’s Hockey Falls Short of Comeback Against No. 1 Plattsburgh

Plattsburgh, NY – After being down by three goals the EC Women's Ice Hockey team fought back well, but they would not be able to hold off the No. 1 Plattsburgh State University Cardinals Sunday afternoon at Stafford Ice Arena. The Cardinals remain undefeated at 16-0-1 overall and 9-0-0 in conference play, while the Soaring Eagles fall to 15-3-1 overall and 10-2-0 in ECAC West action.  
 
The Cardinals dominated from the beginning of the game scoring four times in the opening period. Plattsburgh converted on goals at the 1:04 and 5:41 marks, by Emma Rutherford and Shannon Stewart, to take an early 2-0 lead. EC was able to respond converting on its first power play opportunity when Tanis Lamoureux '14 put it into the back of the net with Olivia Nystrom '16 assisting on the goal. However, the Cardinals answered right back with two more scores by Stewart and Morgan MacInnis at the 9:34 and 9:55 marks of the period to make it 4-1.
 
In the second period EC turned things around and started to control the puck more getting plenty of opportunities to score. 44 seconds into the period Samantha Curk '13 passed it up to Ashton Hogan '15 who put it into the back of the net to cut down the Cardinal lead. At the 2:56 mark Hogan came through again for EC converting on another goal to make it 4-3 with Caitlin Metcalf '13 assisting on the play. At the 14:36 mark of the period EC tied up the game at 4-4 when Ashley Ryan '15 put it glove side past Cardinal goaltender Sydney Aveson for the score. Assisting on the play were Madison Johnston '13 and Nystrom. However, the Cardinals were able to remain on top during a power play at the 17:40 mark when Caitlin Gilligan crossed it to Allison Era who passed it up to Teal Gove who one timed it home past EC goaltender Lisa Marshall '14.
 
In the final period of play the game went back and forth with both defenses playing strong. The Soaring Eagles would get a couple more opportunities, but the Cardinals defense held up late holding on for the victory. Aveson earned the win for Plattsburgh making 18 saves in the game, while Marshall suffered the loss for EC making 22 saves. 
 
The Purple and Gold will return to action Friday, January 25 and Saturday, January 26 when they travel to Buffalo to take on Buffalo State College in conference action. Friday's game is set to start at 7:00 p.m., while Saturday's game is set to start at 3:00 p.m.
