Elmira, NY – The Elmira College Women's Basketball team got off to a slow start but played even with Hartwick in the second half, as they ultimately fell to the visiting Hawks, 62-44, Friday evening in Speidel Gymnasium. The win improves the Hawks to 15-3 overall and 7-0 in Empire 8 play, while the loss drops the Soaring Eagles to 6-12 and 1-6.

Hartwick came out of the gates taking an early 13-5 lead five minutes in. The Hawks outscored EC 18-8 the remainder of the half to take a commanding, 31-13, lead into intermission. Brittney Dumas led 'Wick with nine points in the opening half as the team shot 59 percent from the field compared to just 17 percent for the Soaring Eagles.

The Hawks continued to control the game in the second half playing stifling defense to limit Elmira scoring opportunities. Despite the tough 'Wick defense Elmira continued to battle and hustle for loose balls, and started to get some shots to fall. The Soaring Eagles showed their mental toughness in the second half as they tied Hartwick on the scoreboard 31-31 in the second 20 minutes, as the Hawks prevailed, 62-44.

Liz Forrest '14 (North Walpole, NH -- Fall Mountain) had a strong second half scoring all nine of her points in the period. Meanwhile, Jessica Zoltowski '14 (Erie, PA -- Harbor Creek) tallied eight points and Alex Balara '15 (Marlton, NJ -- Gloucester Catholic) added seven points.

Dumas paced 'Wick with 14 points, while Kait Veit added 10 as the only other player in double figures. The Hawks held large advantages in points in the paint (26-14) and bench points (30-12). Hartwick shot 60 percent from the field in the game, while EC converted just 28 percent of its attempts. Both teams caused plenty of turnovers as the teams combined to give the ball away 41 times.

The EC Women's Basketball team returns to action tomorrow when it hosts Stevens Institute of Technology at 2:00 p.m. in Speidel Gymnasium.
