Elmira, NY – The Elmira College Women's Hockey team scored less than 90 seconds in and held on late for a 3-0 win against visiting Hamilton College Saturday evening at the Murray Athletic Center. The win improves the Soaring Eagles to 13-1-1, while the loss drops the Continentals to 6-3-0.
Elmira got on the board first just 1:29 into the contest when
Cassidy Delainey '15 fed a pass to
Brooke Wilgosh '15 at the right faceoff circle who blasted a shot off the right post. The rebound ricocheted right out to the top of the left circle where
Samantha Curk '13 lined a one-timer off the bottom of the crossbar and in for the score.
The second period didn't see many scoring opportunities, as neither team was able to find the back of the net. Elmira's best chance came on the penalty kill when
Tanis Lamoureux '14 blocked a shot at the point and skated into Hamilton's zone on a break away but was dragged down by a defender earning EC a power play of its own. After two periods EC held a 17-13 shots on goal advantage.
At the 13:29 mark of the third period the Soaring Eagles picked up an important insurance marker when
Lamoureux stole the puck on a neutral zone turnover and beat Hamilton goaltender Rebecca Hazlett low stick side. The Continentals pulled the goalie with 1:35 remaining and with just over a minute left on the clock
Wilgosh added an empty net score for the 3-0 final.
Lisa Marshall '14 stopped 18 shots in net in the shutout for Elmira, while Hazlett made 25 saves for the Continentals. Tonight's contest marks the seventh time this season the Soaring Eagles have shut out an opponent.
The EC Women's Hockey team returns to action Friday when it hosts Chatham University at 7:00 p.m. at the Murray Athletic Center.
