Elmira, NY -- The Elmira College women's soccer team (3-7-1, 1-2-1 E8) put in a valiant effort against the sixth ranked team in the country, but it was not enough to top Ithaca College (10-1, 4-0 E8). The Bombers scored three first-half goals en route to a 3-0 win at EC's Campus Field.
All of the scoring in today's contest came in the first 45 minutes. Ithaca got things started in the 11th minute when Kelsey King followed up a Ellyn Grant-Keane shot off the crossbar for the 1-0 lead. The Bombers would strike again in the 31st minute when Anna Gray would score her first of two free kick goals. Gray sent a low, dipping ball at the net which slipped past Elmira goaltender,
Amanda Banner '17. Gray would score her second goal of the day in the 40th minute from a 25-yard strike that was out of the reach of Banner. The Bombers took a 3-0 lead into halftime.
The adjustments defensively that the Soaring Eagles made at halftime paid off over the last 45 minutes of play as they held Ithaca to just one shot on goal compared to the seven they had in the first half. While the defensive pressure picked up, EC could not find the back of the net to cut the deficit as the final whistle sounded with the score still 3-0.
Elmira College will be on the road in their next contest as they travel to Pittsford, NY to take on Nazareth College in an Empire 8 Conference matchup. Kick-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
