Elmira, NY – The Elmira College Women's Basketball team used a strong finish to the first half to carry momentum into the second stanza and upend visiting St. John Fisher College, 56-52, Friday evening in Speidel Gymnasium to kick off Athletics Alumni Weekend. The win improves the Soaring Eagles to 7-13 overall and 2-8 in Empire 8 play, while the loss drops the Cardinals to 10-11 and 6-5.
Fisher got out to a 19-8 lead just over 10 minutes into the first half. The Soaring Eagles used a18-6 run to take their first lead of the game at 26-25 with 1:36 remaining in the first half and carried that advantage into intermission. Elmira outrebounded the Cardinals 19-16 in the first half including 9-4 on the offensive glass.
Jessica Zoltowski '14 paced Elmira with 10 points and four rebounds.
The second half was a back-and-forth affair that saw four ties. The hosts led by as many as six, while the visitors held just a two point lead. With just over seven minutes remaining the Cardinals had a two point lead at 47-45. Over the next six minutes the Soaring Eagles used a 7-0 run that included a three-pointer from
Kelsey Geisler '15, a jumper from
Liz Forrest '14 and a strong drive by
Tempestt Black '14. Elmira would sink enough free throws down the stretch to hold on for the win.
Zoltowski paced Elmira with 18 points, nine rebounds and four assists while shooting 7-for-12 from the field. Thannhauser added nine points, while Forrest contributed seven points and seven rebounds. Portia Velasco was the only scorer in double digits for Fisher finishing with 14 points.
The Women's Basketball team returns to action Tuesday when it hosts Alfred University at 6:00 p.m. in Speidel Gymnasium.
