Men’s Volleyball Spikes Past Cairn in Four

Langhorne, PA – The Elmira College Men's Volleyball team started slowly but cruised late as it upended host Cairn University, 3-1 (20-25, 25-18, 25-13, 26-24), Saturday afternoon. The win improves the Soaring Eagles to 7-5 overall, while the loss drops the Highlanders to 5-6.
 
Both teams hit the ball well in the first set as each team finished with 13 kills. However, Elmira committed six errors compared to just three for Cairn as the Highlanders took the first set, 25-20. EC dominated Cairn in kills (15-9) as it led to a 25-18 second stanza win.
 
The Soaring Eagles continued to use that momentum as it nearly doubled the Highlanders in kills (11-6) dominating in a 25-13 third frame victory. The fourth set proved to be extremely even and despite 17 Highlander kills EC prevailed, 26-24, for the four set win.
 
Ryan Gelenitis '14 continued his impressive play tallying 15 kills and 12 digs while hitting a remarkable .519. Erik Griffin '16 recorded nine kills, eight digs and two blocks, while Ryan Nerney '14 added eight kills. Michael Vellutato '14 dished out 35 assists to go with eight digs and Rob Shade '15 registered 10 digs.
