Box Score Pine Valley, NY – The EC Women's Ice Hockey team fell to the sixth-ranked Middlebury College Panthers, 3-1, Saturday afternoon at the Murray Athletic Center on the Class of 2013 Recognition day. With the win the Panthers improve to 16-6-2, while the Soaring Eagles fall to 20-4-1.
In the first period of action EC came out ready taking the edge in shots 15-7 and faceoff wins 11-5. However, both defenses played well not allowing any goals in the opening period of play.
In the second period the Panthers came out strong fighting to take the lead. At the 3:39 mark they registered the game's first goal when Julia Wardwell took a slap shot from the point and Lauren Greer tipped it in for the score. Middlebury stretched out its lead to 2-0 at the 15:13 mark when Emily Fluke passed it over to Katie Mandigo who tipped it just past EC goaltender
Lauren Sullivan '13 for the score. However, the Soaring Eagles were able to cut it back to a one goal lead with a power play score with 43 seconds left in the period.
Brooke Wilgosh '15 took the slap shot at the top and
Cassidy Delainey '15 was able to connect with the tip into the goal.
In the final period of play the Panthers kept the pressure on and secured the game with a score at the 6:34 mark. Mandigo passed it over to Molly Downey who put it into the back of the net.
EC outshot the Panthers 30-23 and held the faceoff win advantage 33-21. Annabelle Jones earned the victory for Middlebury recording 29 saves in the game, while
Sullivan suffered the loss recording 20 saves.
This will conclude the regular season for the Soaring Eagles. Now the team will look forward to the ECAC West Conference Playoffs starting next Saturday, February 23.
