Men’s Volleyball Sweeps Southern Vermont & Regis on First Day at MIT

Cambridge, MA – The Elmira College Men's Volleyball team dominated play on the first day of the MIT Tournament as it swept a pair of opponents Friday evening in Cambridge, MA. The Soaring Eagles defeated Southern Vermont, 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-19) before dismantling Regis, 3-0 (25-7, 25-8, 25-12). With the wins No. 14 Elmira improves to 19-12 on the season.

EC took the first set against Southern Vermont 25-19 behind 16 kills and a .464 team hitting percentage that included just three errors. The second set proved to be a bit closer as the Purple and Gold squeaked out a 25-22 win. Elmira was on fire in the third set as it produced 16 kills and just two errors to close out the Mountaineers, 25-19.

Ryan Gelenitis '14 paced the offense with nine kills, while Andrew Johnson '16 finished with eight kills, two blocks and hit .538. Ryan Nerney '14 also pinpointed eight kills with a .462 hitting percentage to go along with two blocks. Michael Vellutato '14 finished with a double-double dishing out 43 assists and recording 13 digs, while Rob Shade '15 tallied 11 digs.

The Soaring Eagles continued to have success in their second match of the day cruising to a 3-0 victory in which the team combined for 36 kills and just four errors on the way to hitting a remarkable .478.

Mike Ellison '16 led the team with nine kills, three service aces and four digs while hitting .500. Austin Sanderl '15 had a strong performance tallying eight kills and seven digs on a remarkable .667 hitting percentage. Meanwhile, Dylan Kuhn '16 also hit .667 finishing with six kills. Johnson and Erik Griffin '16 recorded five kills apiece. Tyler Smith '15 dished out 30 assists and Shade added nine digs.

The Men's Volleyball team returns to action tomorrow when it takes on the No. 1 team in the nation in Springfield College at 11:00 a.m. before facing host No. 13 MIT at 1:00 p.m.
