Selinsgrove, PA -- The Elmira College field hockey team (0-2) suffered their second consecutive road loss of the 2013 season, falling 5-1 to Susquehanna University (4-1).
Lauren Thomas '14 recorded 14 saves on the night.
The Crusaders jumped on the Soaring Eagles early in the contest, scoring just 2:35 into the game off of a penalty corner. Susquehanna would continue to control the game and apply pressure on Thomas as they outshot Elmira 19-1 in the first 35 minutes. Two additional shots would find the back of the cage as the Crusaders would take a 3-0 lead into the intermission.
Despite facing a three-goal deficit, Elmira came out of the short break with the intent on making this a close game down the stretch. Just over two minutes into the second half, the Soaring Eagle offense had life as
Shannon Nelligan '14 knocked in her first goal of the season. Fellow classmate,
McKenna Light '14, set up the goal off of EC's second penalty corner.
Susquehanna would answer right back with a goal four minutes later which all but killed the momentum that the Purple and Gold had built in the second half. The Crusaders would add a late goal to put the game officially out of reach. Time expired giving Susquehanna the 5-1 victory.
Elmira was outshot 35 to seven on the night and only won four penalty corners compared to the 10 that the Crusaders earned.
The Soaring Eagles will close their early season road schedule with a trip to Ithaca, NY Saturday, September 14th where they will take on the Bombers from Ithaca College. The game is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
