Cortland, NY -- The Elmira College field hockey team (0-1) fell short on the road 8-1 to the SUNY Cortland Red Dragons (2-0) in the season opener.
Lauren Thomas '14 recorded 15 saves for the Soaring Eagles in the 58 minutes and 38 seconds in net.
Cortland put the first goal on the board in the first half when Alexa Sanzone '17 picked up a rebound shot and was able to put it past Thomas just 10 minutes in the game. Then Erin Smith '14 scored two more goals in the first half, to give the Red Dragons ad 3-0 lead going into halftime.
Coming out of the locker room, Cortland put up another goal within the first three minutes. Elmira responded to cut the lead back down to three when
McKenna Light '14 scored off a pass from
Allison Smith '14 and then proceeded to blast the ball past the Red Dragons net minder for the score. This proved to be the lone goal of the day for the EC women as the Red Dragons went on to score the final four goals of the competition.
Mikayla Rebusmen '17 tallied her first minutes of her collegiate career in the net for the Soaring Eagles as she totaled five saves in 10 minutes of action.
Elmira will look to switch gears when they play travel to Susquehanna University on September 10 in the 7:00 p.m. game.
