Women’s Volleyball Wins Season Opener in a Five Set Thriller

Bradford, PA -- After falling behind two sets to one, the Elmira College women's volleyball team (1-0) rallied to claim their first win of the 2013 season as they defeated Pitt-Bradford (1-4) in five sets.  Elmira's Taryn Rumsey '14 guided the Soaring Eagles to their first win of the year with 21 kills while recording 10 digs and two solo blocks.

Today's match between Elmira and Pitt-Bradford marked the fourth straight season the Soaring Eagles have opened the season against Panthers. Elmira has gotten the better of Pitt-Bradford as of late, winning the last three meetings.

Pitt-Bradford got off to a hot start in today's match, opening the day by winning the first set, 25-12.  However, the Soaring Eagles would respond nicely in the second set as Elmira claimed it at 25-21. The Panthers would then win a crucial third set by just two points to take a two sets to one lead.

From there, the EC women would rally to claim the fourth and fifth sets en route to a 3-2 win.  Fourth year standout Taryn Rumsey '14 led all EC hitters with 21 kills while teammate Kiersten Derr '16 added another 11.  Setting up the EC attack was Sami Hanes '16, who assisted on 41 kills tonight.

Defensively, Elmira was led by Rumsey who logged 10 digs along with two solo blocks. Classmate Catherine Miller '14 chipped in with eight digs of her own.

Elmira will be back in action this weekend as the Soaring Eagles host Pitt-Bradford and SUNY Brockport at the EC Tri-Match on Saturday, September 7th.  EC is scheduled to take on the Panthers again at noon and then play the Golden Eagles of SUNY Brockport at 4:00 p.m.  All matches will take place on Elmira College's campus in the Speidel Gymnasium.
