Fredonia, NY -- Despite outshooting the Blue Devils 52-46, the Elmira College men's ice hockey team (9-7, 4-2 ECAC West) fell 5-4 in the closing seconds against Fredonia State (5-8-3, 2-3-2 SUNYAC) today.
Josh Burnell '15 had a hand in each one of EC's goals with a goal and three assists in the loss.
Fredonia State was the first to get on the board just 5:38 into the first, taking the early lead. The Blue Devils increased their lead to 2-0 with 6:40 left in the period. EC regrouped and with 4:57 left in the first
Carter Shinkaruk '16 slipped one past Fredonia's netminder after
Tommy Sumi '16 and Burnell set up the play. The Purple and Gold led the Blue Devils in shots at the end of the first, 21-7.
Jarryd ten Vaanholt '16 tied the game up 4:55 seconds into the second period when the Soaring Eagles went on the man-up advantage.
Greg Whittle '16 and Burnell were credited with the assists on the play. The Blue Devils took back the lead with 9:42 seconds left in the period. Fredonia once again took a two shot lead with 5:26 left in the second. Elmira held the shot advantage in the second period 13-10.
6:24 seconds into the third period the Purple and Gold found themselves on the power play and did what they do best as the second most proficient power-play squad in the nation as
Nick Owen '17 tossed the puck over to Burnell who buried a shot past the goaltender to cut the Blue Devils lead down to 4-3. Sumi tied the game back up with 7:10 left in the third period after Burnell put the puck on his stick. With less than a minute left in the third and with overtime glooming ahead, Fredonia put in the game-winning goal. EC once again led in shots in the third period, 18-9.
Ryan deMelo '15 got the start in the net for the Purple and Gold and made eight saves in 30:18 before
Sal Magliocco '17 entered the game and recorded 13 saves.
The Soaring Eagles will jump back into conference play and finish the remainder of their regular season against ECAC West Conference foes when they travel to Neumann University this Friday, January 24
th. The puck is set to drop at 7:00 p.m.
