Middlebury, VT -- The Elmira College women's ice hockey team (8-3-1) did not trail for the entire game, until the final second of overtime as the No. 2 ranked Middlebury College Panthers (7-1-0) narrowly defeated the Soaring Eagles, 3-2. Tonight's game marks the fifth time in Elmira College history that the Soaring Eagles have opened the New Year against Middlebury College and in each of the five games, only a single goal has been the difference.
Elmira jumped out to a 1-0 lead with 6:22 left in the first period when
Ashley Ryan '15 scored her eighth goal of the season. It is also the third straight game Ryan has found the back of the net.
Tanis Lamoureux '14 and
Erin Weston '15 picked up assists on the game's opening goal and for Lamoureux, tonight's assist ups her career total to 48, tying her for 12th most in Elmira College history.
Middlebury evened things up early in the second period on a power play goal by Katie Sullivan. Elmira responded with another goal in the same period as
Briana Saltstone '14 put the Soaring Eagles ahead 2-1. Classmates
Ashton Hogan '15 and
Cassidy Delainey '15 were credited with assists on the go-ahead goal.
The Soaring Eagles maintained their one goal advantage until the 12:16 mark of the third period when Pam Schulman beat a pair of EC defenders before burying a wrist shot, tying the game at two apiece. Elmira would have their chances in the third period as two shots caromed off the pipes, just barely missing the twine for a game-winning goal, eventually leading to an overtime period.
Just 1:50 into overtime, Middlebury's Katie Mandigo would net the game-winner, giving the Panthers a 3-2 win, their second victory over the Soaring Eagles this season. EC goalie
Kyle Nelson '17 was peppered with shots throughout the game, making 28 saves in today's contest.
The Elmira women will have nearly a week to prepare for another nationally ranked opponent as the Soaring Eagles host No. 3 Norwich University on Friday, January 10th in a 7:00 p.m. game at the Murray Athletic Center in Pine Valley, NY.
