Pittsford, NY -- The Elmira College women's soccer team (5-6-3, 1-3-2 E8) nearly matched host St. John Fisher College (6-9-0, 4-2-0 E8) shot-for-shot, but the Soaring Eagles were unable to capitalize on their chances as EC departed Growney Stadium with a 2-0 loss.
The Cardinals had a bit of luck on their side in the early goings of tonight's game. In the sixth minute, Fisher's Jackie Romano delivered a cross from the right side of the goalkeeper's box, but her cross drifted closer to the net than initially intended. However, Romano's misplayed cross proved to be the difference today as her delivery turned into a goal as it slipped through the hands of a fully-extended
Amanda Banner '17, giving the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.
Elmira would recover from the early score, keeping Fisher scoreless for the remainder of the first half and nearly evening things on a
Mackenzie Donohue '15 free kick. From 25 yards out, Donohue sent a shot around the Fisher wall but her attempt would miss wide left as the game remained 1-0 entering halftime.
In the second half, Elmira again played the Cardinals tight but a through ball inside EC's 18 turned into another Fisher score. In the 72nd minute, Taryn Guinta slotted a pass through a pair of Elmira defenders to Carly Finn who would have a one-on-one with Banner. From eight yards out, Finn would find the lower left corner of the goal for Fisher's second goal of the game and a 2-0 lead.
The Soaring Eagles looked to cut the Fisher lead but would struggle to create opportunities as the Cardinal defense held Elmira without a shot in the final 18 minutes of play, resulting in a 2-0 loss for EC.
Elmira will look to bounce back this Saturday, October 25th when the Purple and Gold travel to Alfred, NY for an Empire 8 Conference showdown with Alfred University. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
