Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Men's Ice Hockey Powers Past Hobart, 4-2

Geneva, NY -- The Elmira College men's ice hockey team picked up their second ECAC West Conference win in a row, and their first road victory of the 2014-15 season, defeating Hobart College, 4-2. Greg Whittle '16 paced the way for the Soaring Eagles, scoring two goals, including the eventual game-winner in the second period.

Also getting in on the scoring action were Alexander Taulien'17 and Carter Shinkaruk'16. EC totaled three assists on the evening, one each from Jarryd ten Vaanholt'16, Tommy Sumi'16, and Andrew Ciampichini'15. For ten Vaanholt and Sumi, their assists extend each players' respective points streaks to six and five games, respectively.

EC came out firing in the first period, taking five shots, including three on goal, in the game's opening minutes. The momentum shifted just over five minutes in when Nick Owen '17 picked-up the game's first penalty, putting Hobart on the power play. Elmira's penalty kill unit, however, stood tall and did not allow a single shot during the two-minute, man-down situation. Shortly after Owen was released from the penalty box, the Statesmen were whistled for their first penalty, putting Elmira's power play unit on the ice.

The Soaring Eagles capitalized on their man-up opportunity quickly, scoring just 19 seconds after Hobart's Nick Bingaman went into the box. Taulien was the one to net the game's opening goal and did so unassisted. EC's 1-0 lead would last for a little over a minute as the Statesmen equaled things up with a goal of their own. The 1-1 score would hold until the end of the period.

The second period was almost all EC as the Purple and Gold netted two goals in the first eight minutes of play. Shinkaruk broke the 1-1 tie with his second goal of the season just 1:02 into the second period. His goal was assisted by Ciampichini. Then, seven minutes later, Whittle would score Elmira's second power play goal of the night to make it a 3-1 game. Sumi and ten Vaanholt both recorded assists on Whittle's goal.

Elmira had an opportunity to go add another goal to its total as they went on another power play with just over six minutes remaining in the second period, but it would be the Statesmen who would cut the lead to one as Sean Rudy scored a short-handed goal. The score would remain 3-2 as the teams entered the third period.

Hobart came out looking for the equalizer in the third period, challenging EC goaltender, Sal Magliocco '17 throughout the final 20 minutes. The Statesmen put 13 shots on goal in the third period, but Magliocco stopped each one to maintain the one-goal advantage. That one-goal lead turned to two with 41 seconds to play as Whittle scored an empty-net goal to seal the 4-2 Elmira victory.

Magliocco made a total of 25 saves in tonight's contest, including 13 in the third period, as he picked-up his first win of the season.

The Soaring Eagles are back in action tomorrow night as they complete the weekend series against the Statesmen. The puck is scheduled to drop at 7:30 p.m. at the Geneva Recreation Complex.
