Elmira, NY -- The Elmira College men's ice hockey team will be looking for a weekend sweep against ECAC West rival Manhattanville College this weekend. The first of two games is scheduled for tonight, February 14th, at 7:30 p.m. in Stamford, CT.
Home Ice on the Line
Elmira's 5-3 win over Hobart College kept the Soaring Eagles in the race to have home ice throughout the ECAC West Tournament. The Soaring Eagles sit in second place in the conference standings, just one point away from ECAC West leader Utica College and three points ahead of third place Hobart. The Valiants of Manhattanville College on the other hand are looking to solidify their spot at fourth in the standings and possibly move up with hopes of hosting a round of the ECAC West Tournament.
Fifth Game in a Row
Elmira was outshot 47-to-32 in EC's 5-3 win on the road against Hobart College, marking the fifth consecutive game the Soaring Eagles have been outshot. However, despite being outshot, Elmira is 4-1 in their last five games.
Comeback Kids
The Soaring Eagles used three third period goals to complete the come-from-behind victory over Hobart College last Saturday night, overcoming a 2-1 deficit entering the third period. This is the first time this season that EC has won a game after trailing through two periods and the first since November 4, 2011 when, similar to the Hobart win, Elmira scored three third period goals to defeat Utica College, 3-1.
Four-Game Skid Snapped
With their 5-3 win over Hobart College, the Soaring Eagles successfully snapped a four-game losing streak to the Statesmen. Hobart is one of four teams that owned a win-streak against Elmira only to see it snapped by the Soaring Eagles this season.
ECAC West Player of the Week
With three points on two goals and an assist in EC's win over Hobart,
Jarryd ten Vaanholt '16 was selected as the ECAC West Player of the Week, his second time winning the award this season. ten Vaanholt scored the game's opening goal on a power play opportunity and then punched home the game-winner in the third period.
Most Since 2009-10
Elmira's 32 power play goals this season are the most the Soaring Eagles have scored since the 2009-10 season when EC scored 42 power play goals. The 2009-10 season was the last in a stretch of six straight seasons with 42 or more power play scores.
Best Power Play Since 1998-99
The Purple and Gold boast the nation's top power play unit, scoring on 29.1% of their man-up opportunities. EC's success rate on the power play is their highest since the 1998-99 season when the Soaring Eagles scored on 41-of-141 chances for a 29.1% success rate.
Your PK Unit's Worst Nightmare
Josh Burnell '15 has been nothing short of spectacular on the power play this season, scoring nine power play goals. He is in a four-way tie for first place in NCAA Division III men's ice hockey in power play goals per game, averaging 0.45 man-up goals. His nine power play scores are also the most an EC skater has scored since the 2009-10 season when Darcy Vaillancourt '12 tallied 12 man-up goals.
Top 10 Scoring Offense
EC has scored 85 goals through the first 21 games of the season, just eight shy of last year's total. Elmira's 4.05 goals per game average ranks them eighth in the country in scoring offense, making the Soaring Eagles the only ECAC West team inside the top 10 in that category.
30-Point Scorer
Following his three-point performance against Hobart,
Josh Burnell '15 now has 30 points on the season. He is Elmira's first 30-point scorer since the 2011-12 season when Kevin Willer '12 finished his final season with 33 points.
