Men’s Ice Hockey Completes Comeback In Third Period

Geneva, NY -- The Elmira College men's ice hockey team (13-8-0, 8-3-0 ECAC West) scored three goals in the third period to lift the Purple and Gold to a 5-3 win over Hobart College (11-6-4, 5-3-3 ECAC West). Jarryd ten Vaanholt '16 and Josh Burnell '15 both registered three points today to lead the Soaring Eagles to victory. ten Vaaholt scored two goals and added an assist while Burnell picked up two assists and netted a goal. Ryan deMelo '15 made 44 saves in the victory.
 
It took only 3:19 for EC to register the first goal of the game. The number one power-play unit showed up to work today as they netted a goal on their first man-up opportunity. Burnell and Tommy Sumi '16 tossed the puck over to ten Vaanholt who punched the puck into the back of the net to give Elmira the early lead. Hobart would tie the game after Carl Belizario '17 slid one past DeMelo with 6:14 left in the period. The Statesmen would take the lead 37 seconds later when Tommy Fiorentino '14 found the back of the net when Hobart was shorthanded. EC responded back 43 seconds later when the third best power play scorer in the nation did what he does best and netted a goal on the man-up opportunity to tie the game up at 2-2. Eric David '15 was credited with the assist on the play.  Hobart led the shot advantage in the first period, 13-8.
 
Hobart took the lead again after finding themselves on the man-up advantage with just 49 seconds left in the second period. The Statesmen held the 17-10 shot advantage in the second period.
 
After successfully killing off three penalties in a row in the third period, Greg Whittle '16 tied the game up at 3-3 with 8:31 seconds left in the game. Just 15 seconds later ten Vaaholt scored his second goal of the night, unassisted, in what would prove to be the game-winner. Eddie Nolan '17 gave EC an insurance goal with 3:05 left in the final period. Burnell and Dylon Herold '14 were credited with assists on the play. Hobart, once again, led in shots in the third, 17-14 while the Statesmen held the overall shot advantage, 47-2.
 
The Purple and Gold will have a break until the EC men travel to Manhattanville College this Friday and Saturday, February 14th and 15th. The puck is set to drop at 7:30 p.m. on both nights.
