Men’s Volleyball Drops a Pair of Matches At the UVC Crossover

CAMBRIDGE, MA --The Elmira College men's volleyball team (6-5, 1-2 UVC) dropped a pair of matches in the first day of their first UVC Crossover of the Purple and Gold's season.  The Soaring Eagles started the day with a 2-3 loss to the hands of No. 13 Massachusetts Institute of Technology and then finished the day with a 1-3 loss to No. 2 SUNY New Paltz.
 
Offensively, the EC men were led by Erik Griffin '16 and Ryan Gelenitis '14 who both tallied 24 kills today. Michael Vellutato '14 lent his helping hand by posting 89 assists while also notching in four aces in the loses.
 
Defensively, the Purple and Gold were led by Rob Shade '15 who collected 23 digs while Griffin finished the day with 14 digs.  Vellutato led the team with six solo blocks and one block assist.
 
Game One Recap
Elmira 2, MIT 3 – 25-19, 21-25, 25-20, 13- 15

EC battled MIT closely in the first set and found themselves tied at 17 a piece.  After the Soaring Eagles picked up two straight points, the Engineers called a timeout.  After the stoppage of play the Purple and Gold went on a 6-2 run to close out the first set. Once again both teams battled in the second set and with a MIT leading 20-19, the Engineers went on a 5-2 run to even the sets up at 1-1. The EC men came out ready to play in the third set and cruised to a 21-12 lead. MIT regrouped and scored five straight points to cut Elmira's lead to 21-17. EC went on a 4-4 run to take the set lead 2-1. In the fourth set MIT was up 14-13 over the Purple and Gold and scored five straight points that proved to be the difference as they eventually would take the 25-20 win to tie the sets up 2-2, forcing the fifth set. Both teams battled back and forth in the fifth set until the Engineers collected the final point to close out the match with a 3-2 win.
 
Game Two Recap
Elmira 1, New Paltz 3 – 22-25, 24-26, 25-21, 22-25
New Paltz started the game off strong as they scored the first five points of the match. EC battled back and went on an 8-3 run to tie the game up.  The Hawks then scored the next three points causing an Elmira timeout. The Soaring Eagles then went on a 10-2 run to take an 18-13 lead over New Paltz. For the rest of the set the Hawks continued to chip away at the EC lead until they were able to close out the set with the 25-22 victory. Both teams battled in the second set as neither team held a lead more than four points. EC just missed tying the sets up as they fell to New Paltz 24-26. In the third set both teams were tied at 17 points apiece until EC scored four straight points to take a 21-17 lead. The Hawks responded with three straight points, but the EC men would take their first set of the match after closing the third set on a 4-1 run. In the fourth set neither team found themselves on any sort of run untill finiding themselves locked up at 21 points apiece. The Hawks would then close out the match by going on a 4-2 run.
 
The Soaring Eagles will close out the weekend in the second day of the UVC Crossover against Vassar College. The match is set to start at 12:30 p.m.
