Women's Soccer Shuts Out Potsdam for First Win of 2014

 | HTML Box Score

Postdam, NY --
The Elmira College women's soccer team used timely goals from Courtney Burgazli '16 and Mackenzie Donohue '15 to shutout SUNY Potsdam, 2-0. Amanda Banner'17 received the start in net for the Soaring Eagles, her first of the season, and made three saves to preserve the shutout.

Shots came at a premium for much of the first half as there were a combined seven shots taken in the first 41 minutes of play, three by EC and four by Potsdam. Elmira's fourth shot put the Purple and Gold on the board, in part thanks to a miscue by the Potsdam goaltender. Burgazli fired a shot on frame which appeared to be scooped up by Bears goalie, Val Driscoll, but the ball bounced off of Driscoll's hands and into the back of the net giving EC the 1-0 lead with just over two minutes to play in the half. Donohue was credited with the assist on the score. Elmira would take the 1-0 lead into the halftime break.

The second half was similar to the first as the defenses controlled the action. There were more shots taken in the second half as EC was looking to extend their lead and Potsdam was looking for the equalizer, but it took until the 85th minute to get the second goal of the game. This time it was Donohue who would net the score as she fired her shot into the net from the top of the 18-yard box. Abby Saturni'18 recorded her first career assist on the score which gave EC a 2-0 lead with five minutes to play. The Soaring Eagles would hold off the Potsdam charge to secure the 2-0 victory.

EC returns home this weekend for a pair of non-conference games. Elmira takes on Clarkson University on Friday, September 12th at 4:00 p.m. and then hosts St. Lawrence University on Saturday, September 12th at 2:00 p.m. Both games will be played at EC's Campus Field.
