Men’s Ice Hockey Surrenders Two Late Goals, Falls to Manhattanville 3-1

College Hockey Stats Box Score

Pine Valley, NY --
The Elmira College men's ice hockey team (8-6-3, 2-3-2 ECACW) was 11 seconds away from playing an overtime period but a pair of goals in the closing seconds by Manhattanville College (7-6-4, 2-4-1 ECACW) sealed a 3-1 victory for the Valiants.

Although the first 20 minutes of tonight's game was scoreless, the first 20 seconds of the second period would see the Soaring Eagles take a 1-0 lead behind a power-play goal from Eric David '15.  David fired a slap shot from the blue line that would make its way through traffic for the score.  Alexander Taulien '17 and Greg Whittle '16 would be credited with assists on the Elmira goal.

Less than seven minutes later, Manhattanville's Anton Racklin evened things at one apiece as he punched-in the score off of his own rebound.

The Valiants had three power-play chances in the second period but Elmira's penalty killers proved to be up for the challenge as the Soaring Eagles successfully denied Manhattanville on all three opportunities, as the two teams skated into the final intermission tied at 1-1.

Elmira upped the offensive pressure in the third period, outshooting Manhattanville 16-to-9.  EC's aggressive approach nearly paid off when, with about 55 seconds on the clock, Carter Shinkaruk '16 wristed a low-lining shot that ricocheted off Brian Fleming's blocker and to Andrew Ciampichini '15 just outside the crease.  Ciampichini nearly knocked-in the game-winner with a one-time shot but his attempt skimmed over top of the crossbar, keeping things tied at 1-1.

Then, with about 21 seconds remaining, Manhattanville's Felming went down on the ice forcing a stoppage in play.  This would prove to be an important part of tonight's game as the Soaring Eagles were pressing offensively at the time but the stoppage would allow Manhattanville to reset, and win an in-zone faceoff.

After winning the faceoff, the Valiants were off to the races and challenged Elmira on the rush, despite rushing with just two players compared to EC's three.  Fabian Andark carried the puck into the slot on the rush and fired a shot towards net but teammate Nolan Marshall, who attempted to set a screen on the rush, saw the puck redirect off of his skate and into the back of the net for the score.  The Manhattanville goal was promptly protested by Elmira as it looked like Marshall may have been in the crease when the goal was scored, but after a mid-ice discussion, the officials decided that the Valiant goal would stand, giving them a 2-1 lead with 11 seconds remaining in the third period.

Elmira opted to pull Ryan deMelo '15 from net for the final 11 seconds in hopes of scoring a late game-tying goal.  On the ensuing faceoff, Manhattanville's Eric McClure slapped at the puck as it dropped to the ice and made good contact, so good that the puck sneaked past Elmira's two defenders and dribbled into the empty net for the score with eight seconds to play, all but sealing Manhattanville's 3-1 victory.

deMelo made 28 saves for the Soaring Eagles tonight, 14 of which came in the first period alone.  His counterpart, Brian Fleming, stopped 36 shots with 16 of those saves coming in the third period.

The Soaring Eagles will look to avenge tonight's loss tomorrow as Elmira hosts Manhattanville for another ECAC West showdown at the Murray Athletic Center Ice Arena at 7:00 p.m.
