Elmira, NY -- The Elmira College women's soccer team heads to Houghton College on only one day of rest, as the Soaring Eagles take on the Highlanders tonight at 7:00 p.m. at Burke Field.
The contest will be the third consecutive Empire 8 Conference matchup on the road for the Soaring Eagles, who are coming off a 3-1 loss to Nazareth College on Saturday.
Last Time OutThe Golden Flyers flew out to an early 2-0 lead over the Purple and Gold in the opening minutes of Saturday's game. Nazareth needed less than two minutes to net their first tally, as Michaela Soules found the back of the net at 1:53. Less than two minutes later, Soules tacked on the eventual game-winner. Although EC found itself down 3-0 at the half, the Soaring Eagles used a spirited effort to hold the Golden Flyers scoreless in the second half. In the 89th minute,
Mikayla Gowett '17 scored the first goal the season to prevent EC from being shutout for the seventh time in 2015.
There's No Place Like HomeMonday's match-up will be the third of four consecutive games away from the confines of Campus Field, which have proven to be extra friendly to the Purple and Gold. Elmira is 0-6 on the road, compared to its 2-2 home record. In addition, six of the team's seven goals have been scored at Campus Field. Gowett's last-minute score against Naz was the first for EC as the visiting team in the 2015 campaign.
All-Time SeriesThe history between the Highlanders and Soaring Eagles is brief; the two programs first faced each other in 2010. Houghton won the first three matches of series, but last season, the two squads played to a 1-1 double overtime draw at Campus Field. That game also marked the first time Elmira and Houghton squared off as Empire 8 Conference opponents.
Scouting HoughtonThe Highlanders enter Monday's matchup with a 4-5-2 overall record, but sit in second-to-last place in the Empire 8 with a 0-2-2 league mark. The Highlanders tied Hartwick College, 1-1, in double overtime on Saturday. Bailey Shattell leads the team with three goals and seven points. Sarah Gabriele, Nikki Garns, and Brielle Kwarta each have two goals on the season. Shawna Sprout has started all 11 games in goal, and sports a 1.11 goals-against average and a 0.794 save percentage. Sprout has four clean sheets, tied for the second-most in the E8 this season.
